Scientists conduct experiments in order to explore and study the world around them. A Mad Scientist’s experiments cross boundaries that ought not to be crossed. If you were a mad scientist what would you experiment with? Prepare to get in touch with your inner mad scientist and get messy. Explore the different states of matter using ingredients you can find around your house. Create magnetic slime, glow-in-the-dark oobleck, spooky bubbles, and even make instant ice cream with dry ice. This program is designed for children 5-10 and their adults.

Animatronic Origami

Almost everything expands as it gets warmer, but did you know some metals actually contract when they are heated? Nickel Titanium shape memory actuator wire, or “Muscle Wire” has a unique ability to contract when a current is passed through it, making it perfect for art and robotics. It was even used on the NASA Sojourner rover mission to Mars in 1997. Explore the unique properties of this wire and create a circuit that will bring your origami to life. Designed for children 10-15 and their adults.

Electricity powers everything from a single light bulb to an entire city, but how does electricity get from the power plant to your home? Explore how electricity flows by building simple circuits that light up or make noise. Then combine them with other people’s creations to make more complex circuits and see how they interact. Each component will be a building of your own making, and when combined they will form a city as unique as Philadelphia. When you’re finished take your creations home and keep exploring. Light-up fashion has been spreading over the past several years, working its way up from the hobbyist world to the runway, and now disseminating back into the community. Our class is designed to give beginners a crash course in circuits and sewing and a practical guide to working with e-textiles. We’ll provide materials for attendees to make an LED felt monster, or you can bring your own fabric and work on your own project. No previous experience is required. Prior programming knowledge is not required.

About the Instructors

Allison has a BFA in Textile Design from Moore College of Art and Design and an MLS from Drexel University. In her spare time Allison is pickling, sewing, making art out of old maps and working on an overly ambitious vegetable garden. Allison also helps run The Hacktory’s Kid’s Club, every Friday from 3:30 to 5:30.
