The Department of Making + Doing (DM+D) is a collaboration between four dynamic Philadelphia-based organizations which blend expertise in design, fabrication, electronics, and art to encourage learning through doing. Our hands-on civic innovation workshop provides the space, tools, + knowledge to empower youth, adults and community organizations to make and do great things throughout the area.
In 2012, Evan Malone, Founder and President of NextFab, was faced with a problem. Three years into a five year lease, NextFab’s capacity had far outgrown the space at 3711 Market Street. With the necessity for more space, Evan was forced to consider terminating the lease and approached the Science Center to explore new options for activation. By uniting dynamic, community-focused organizations to share the space, tools and resources, DM+D began.
Over the next couple of months, The Hacktory, Public Workshop, Science Center, and NextFab worked out the details and applied for grants. Good news came quickly and after winning a grant from The Knight Foundation in April 2013, DM+D’s doors opened in May. Since then DM+D continues to evolve, struggle, experiment, and grow with the support of our community, our partners, our funders, and you.
